Mark Smith

Mark trained at The Royal Ballet School and London Studio Centre.

He is a freelance Dance Teacher, Workshop Leader, Movement Director, Choreographer and Director, and is the Founder and Artistic Director of Deaf Men Dancing and DMD+.

Mark received an Olivier Award nomination for Best Theatre Choreographer 2024 for The Little Big Things(@sohoplace, London). He was also nominated for Best Choreographer at the Off-West End Awards and BroadwayWorld UK Awards for Ace of Clubs, Call Me Madam, Iolanthe and Hedwig & The Angry Inch, and for the Live Theatre & British Theatre Awards for The Who’s Tommy and The Last Five Years. He is a recipient of the MGCfutures Bursary supporting his development as a theatre director.

His work with Chichester Festival Theatre includes 101 Dalmatians, Noah, The Meeting, A Marvellous Year for Plumsand The Lion, The Witch & The Wardrobe. International and commercial credits include Money Makes the World Go Round and Echoes in the Night (Carnival UK/3 Pins Productions).

As Artistic Director of Deaf Men Dancing, Mark has created and choreographed numerous works including Hear! Hear!, Sense of Freedom, Let Us Tell You A Story, Time, Corazon a Corazon, Ten, Embrace and Alive!.

Television and live broadcast credits include My Silent World (BalletBoyz for Channel 4 Random Acts), Channel 4’s Paralympic Homecoming, the London 2012 Paralympic Opening Ceremony and The Royal Variety Show 2024 (The Little Big Things).

Workshop and development work includes National English Ballet Theatre Choreography Lab, Crush – The Musical, Isolation in the Dark (Mercury Theatre), Medusa (Metta Theatre), Integrated ChoreoLab, Hut 8 – The Alan Turing Project, D-Clusivity, Synergy and Regents Park Dance Takeover.

Mark is also a sought-after choreographer and director across leading performing arts institutions including Bird College, Royal Academy of Music, ArtsEd, Mountview, Guildford School of Acting, London School of Musical Theatre, Musical Theatre Academy and the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama.
